In this article, we'll specifically look at the top foundries around the world in this area. It is one of the oldest metal-forming techniques that has been around for centuries. Investment casting is the most common precision casting method based on lost wax casting. What does a precision casting company do? Ranging from global foundry groups to small jobbing foundries, CMF Member foundries supply precision finished parts and assemblies in a range of sizes, metals and process to the UK and global markets and generate sales revenues of at least £1.89billion.įor more information on the 2017 Casting Industry Census or on CMF contact: Dr Pam Murrell FICME, Cast Metals Federation, National Metalforming Centre, 47 Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, West Midlands B70 6PY, United Kingdom, Tel: +44 (0) 1, Fax: +44 (0) 1, Email: Web: 1. The data was collected during late 2017.ĬMF Member foundries represent every part of the sector and manufacture around 85% of all castings produced in the UK. The 2017 Casting Industry Census was commissioned by the Cast Metals Federation and compiled by the Enterprise Research Centre, ERC, University of Warwick Business School from data supplied by 159 CMF Member foundries. “Castings are, and will continue to be, used in all areas of modern life – so perhaps the only question is ‘will they be made here in the UK?’ I certainly hope so, as we have many innovative and highly productive component manufacturers here, adding value and providing skilled jobs to the UK economy”. Clearly, it remains challenging for UK foundries to compete with high energy prices and strict environmental controls, so we cannot compete on price – we need to be efficient and productive, embracing new technologies and automation where appropriate and offering a solution to engineers and designers. Pam Murrell, CEO of the Cast Metals Federation who commissioned the study from the ERC at the University of Warwick Business School, said: “The 2017 Casting Industry Census clearly shows that there is an opportunity for the UK manufacturing sector, and casting supply chain which is integral to it, to supply highly engineered components to the high value manufacturing sector both at home and internationally – we now need the manufacturing environment in the UK to continue to encourage and enable UK firms to develop and grow to take advantage of this opportunity. The direct value of the sector to the UK economy is almost £2 billion but taking into account the diverse range of sectors served, the impact to the UK economy will be higher. The census also confirmed the wide range of high value sectors that rely upon components manufactured using the casting process, from the more obvious ones such as aerospace to automotive, through to the chemical industry, defence and renewable energy – indeed all sectors that serve our modern technologically enabled lives rely to some degree on liquid metal engineering. The UK investment casting sector makes up 50% of the European market, with Europe accounting for 43% of the world share, so the UK investment casting industry is globally significant, according to figures from the European Investment Casters’ Federation quoted in the census. Indeed, 16% of the total industry turnover was exported making it a significant part of the industry’s income. For larger companies, with over 100 employees, 50% of turnover is being exported (for companies with over 50 employees the figure was almost 41%). Nearly 50% of UK foundries export castings, with 80% of these exports going into the EU – such are the findings of the 2017 Casting Industry Census published this month. Whilst nowhere near as heavily processed as its predecessors, Spectre still has a very steely look, often cold and monochromatic (even when it goes for sepia tones in the burnt Mexico City rather than straight black and white that it enjoys in Austria). Clarity is very good, but the Blu-ray was already largely demo, so Spectre has an uphill struggle distinguishing itself on pure pixels alone. In some ways, it's good that this isn't the end of Craig's era, but it'll take some work to undo the unnecessarily retroactive damage done here.Ī presentation that is still demo, even if it isn't DeakinsĬonsiderably better than both Casino Royale 4K and Quantum of Solace 4K, Spectre is still a slight step down from the majesty of Skyfall 4K. Detail is very pleasing but it’s hard not to yearn for the sheer perfection that came before, with the shot-on film texture affording a wonderfully rich palette, but one which is also that little bit more hazy than before. And Ralph Fiennes gets some choice scenes too. Bond, and even then he's called upon to date his daughter - sorry, the daughter of his nemesis from the first two films - who happens to have zero personality and shares no chemistry with him. vehicle convoy chase makes no sense even in a Bond film, and perhaps only the Spy Who Loved Me tribute train fight affords some measure of impact, with Dave Bautista providing a powerhouse henchman for Bond to tackle.Īnd that's all before Christoph Waltz's ineffective Blofeld arrives on the scene to pose absolutely zero threat (did any of his torture actually have the effect he described?), and somehow find the time to plaster pictures of a Casino Royale-era Bond all over the shell of a blown-up MI6 building, and face off against Bond in the least impressive fashion ever.ĭespite all of this, Craig is still clearly trying his best to be the same gritty Bond we've watched in the last three films, even when the stunning Monica Bellucci is randomly melting at his feet for no apparent reason other than. The spectacular single-take-style Day of the Dead prologue ends up being just plain silly (at least Roger Moore's Bond had the good decency to have aerial 'fights' far from populated areas), the car chase is possibly the least tense of the entire series, and is utterly anti-climactic, the plane vs. There's plenty that could have worked but unfortunately doesn't. It's a terrible script, desperately tying in plots that have no need to be tied together But, hang on, Quantum was just a part of a bigger organisation, Spectre, run by one guy who can't afford socks. Whilst Quantum of Solace doesn't work as any kind of solo Bond film whatsoever, it's an immaculately conceived direct sequel to Casino Royale, perfectly tying up the events in that with a grander scheme - and organisation, Quantum - that worked logically and thematically. And why? Because daddy treated him better than me. It's a terrible script, desperately tying in plots that have no need to be tied together, and were simply never designed this way, undermining the importance of the death of Bond's love, Vesper Lynd, the motivations of the confrontation with his spy-gone-wrong antagonist in Skyfall, and suggesting that this grand scheme was predicated on an impossible knowledge that Bond would somehow always win against all of these impossible odds - and not die along the way (but, conveniently, all of the right people would die). But Spectre sought to bring it all home in a package centred on Bond's arch-nemesis Blofeld, returning to the franchise 'officially' for the first time in decades (since 1971's Diamonds Are Forever) and now apparently the cause of everything that ever happened to Bond ever since Casino Royale. Love for Skyfall has always been in question but, for many, it cemented Craig in the classic role. Casino Royale was a tremendous debut, one of the best Bond films of all time, and - watched back-to-back - Quantum of Solace is a surprisingly effective action finale to the story. Craig had a good run up until this movie. Reboot computer again to see if the problem gets solved or not. Hold Command + Option + P + R keys while booting Mac to reset NVRAM Ĥ. Although the gameplay itself may prove tiresome over long periods, the game's story elements, sense of isolation, and soundtrack make Out There a more-than-worthwhile purchase.Let’s get one thing straight you’re going to die. The title avoids a number of science fiction tropes, and the bold move to avoid combat mechanics gives Out There its own place in space-based video games. Out There has translated to home computers with ease, taking on the extra content required in its stride. If a playthrough is unsuccessful, however, it will not be long before players will want to start another, such is the desire to discover more of the game's universe. Star systems will not always contain gas giants or garden planets, and an unlucky encounter on the way to another system could see severe damage done to the ship hull. The cosmos can be cruel and unforgiving, and the random nature of the game's universe means that a player's skill will not always dictate success. It's a calm that could be needed, however, as Out There does have the potential to frustrate. Out There's music is gentle and unobtrusive, creating a deceptive calm. It works well with the sparse writing, and marries brilliantly with the game's ambient electronic soundtrack, created by Antichamber composer Siddhartha Barnhoorn. Out There has a pulp sci-fi feel, comparable to old-school sci-fi comics, and the vibrant color palette includes Hotline Miami-esque neon-soaked moments to create a varied and complex universe. The title has plenty of influence from science fiction of days gone by, particularly in terms of the graphical style. Out There nails down the idea of the cosmos being a dangerous and expansive void, which is lost all-too often in other spaced-based games. In terms of science fiction video games, this is 2001: A Space Odyssey to FTL's original Star Trek. Mi-Clos Studio's title is incredibly successful in creating a sense of loneliness, meaning that every moment of contact with another race seems extremely important for the astronaut's wellbeing. The brief meetings with alien races only intensify the feeling of isolation that Out There provides. This worked incredibly well on mobile platforms, but home computer players may be left wanting more. The majority of the early gameplay is made up of three different proactive gameplay moments: sending probes for fuel, mining ore planets, and landing on garden planets. As a result, if players found the planet-probing moments of Bioware's series less-than-enthralling, then Out There might not be entertaining. In a strange way, this means that the game almost plays out like the galaxy exploration mini-games of the Mass Effect series, particularly Mass Effect 2. Keeping tabs on fuel, air, and hull stability is essential, with different elements repairing or refilling the Fuel, Oxygen, and Hull meters. These elements can be found by mining ore-rich planets to repair the hull, probing gas giants for hydrogen and helium for fuel, and landing on garden planets to refill oxygen supplies. Players are not able to rely on firepower to escape dangerous situations, and the bulk of the gameplay is instead focused around resource management. Out There's gameplay is entirely based around vulnerability and survival. |
